Abstract

This study entitled “The Effectiveness of TransTool (Translation Tool): A Computer in Translating English Scientific Texts into Bahasa Indonesia” aims to find out what problems can be found in translating English scientific texts into Bahasa Application Indonesia and how effective the TransTool is to translate English scientific texts into Bahasa Indonesia in terms of Word Level, Phrase Level, Clause Level, Sentence Level, and Paragraph Level. Data were collected from an internet site of HarunYahya.com through several data collection procedures: 1) finding the data source; 2) sorting the data; and 3) translating the data. Data is then 1) analyzed, 2) put into groups and specifications in relation to the problems, 3) evaluated and elaborated, 4) discussed by giving explanations, and 5) calculated to find numbers and percentages. There are two major groups of translation: correct translation and incorrect translation. At Word Level, incorrect translation consists of: 1) acceptable to HT translation shift, 2) equivalent translation, 3) synonymous translation. Incorrect translation consists of: 1) lexical ambiguity, 2) incorrect meaning of words, 3) change in word-classes, 4) problems with the scientific terms, 5) translation shift, 6) problems with plural reduplication forms, 7) EYD (Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan), and 8) bias translation. At Phrase Level, correct translation consists of: 1) synonymous translation and 2) equivalent translation; incorrect translation consists of: 1) bias translation, 2) incorrect phrase structures, 3) incorrect meaning of words, 4) problem with the scientific terms, 5) translation shifts, 6) problems with plural reduplication forms, 7) change in word-classes, and 8) EYD. At Clause Level, correct translation consists of: 1) synonymous translation and 2) equivalent translation; incorrect translation consists of: 1) problems with the scientific terms, 2) bias translation, 3) change in word-class, 4) incorrect meaning of words, 5) incorrect structures, 6) problems with plural reduplication forms, 7) translation shifts, and 8) EYD. Sentence Level consists of: correct translation and incorrect translation. Paragraph Level consists of correct translation and incorrect translation. Word Level contains 328 words: correct translation gets 181 words (55.18%) and incorrect translation gets 147 words (44.82%). Phrase Level contains 229 phrases/compounds: correct translation gets 62 phrases (27.08%) and incorrect translation gets 167 phrases/compounds (72.92%). Clause Level contains 157 clauses: correct translation gets 19 clauses (12.11%) and incorrect translation gets 138 clauses (87.89%). Sentence Level contains 62 sentences: correct translation gets 1 sentence (1.61%) and incorrect translation gets 61 sentences (98.39%). Paragraph Level contains 17 paragraphs: correct translation gets 0 paragraph (0.00%) and incorrect translation gets 17 paragraphs (100%). Word records the highest in number of correct translation to that of the incorrect, with 5.18% aggregate. As a conclusion, translation of a scientific text by means of TransTool is more effective at Word level than at Phrase Level, at Phrase Level than at Clause Level, at Clause Level than at Sentence Level, and at Sentence Level than at Paragraph Level. However, this also means that the higher the level, the higher in number and percentage of errors or ineffectiveness are produced, which also indicates an unsatisfying or unproductive translation products.

Item Type: Thesis (S1)
Keywords (Kata Kunci): also means that the higher the level, the higher in number and percentage of errors or ineffectiveness are produced, which also indicates an unsatisfying or unproductive translation products.
