Abstract

This research was conducted experimentally at SMPN 3 Lingsar. The sample was 60 students of the second year students. Repeated measures design was applied to collect the data. The data were collected by using tests and they were analyzed by using t-test formula. There were three steps in this research i.e. the pre-tests, the treatments and the post-tests. In the pre-tests the researcher measured the background of the students’ descriptive text writing ability. In the treatment the researcher introduced the guiding question to assist the students in writing descriptive text. In the post-tests the researcher administered the students a test to measure students’ writing skill. In the pre-tests, 48% of the students reached excellent category. There were 41% in very good. In the category good and fair there were 6% and 3.34%. None of them were in the others categories. Comparing to the post-tests, 71% of the students achieved excellent category and 23% of students in the very good category. In the good category there were only 5% of the students. With t-test, it was found that the value of t-obs is higher than the t-table value. If the degree of freedom was 59, the level of confidence .05 (95%) showed 2.0010 and 2.6618 at .01 (99%) as the minimum coeficient. While the t-test calculation showed 6.550 values. It indicated that there was a significant difference between pre-tests and post-tests scores.
