Abstract

This Study aims at finding out students’ expectations in learning English speaking and to find out which expectations are dominant among the students. The population of this study was the eleventh grade students of MA. DI. Putra Nurul Hakim in academic year 2009/2010 which consist of three classes namely language class, natural science class and social science class with the total number of 93 students. The sample was taken from the total number of population because the population is less than a hundred. The data was collected by using interview and questionnaire. In analyzing the data, qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze the data of this study. After analyzing the data, the writer found many students’ expectations: The students learn English speaking because many of them expect that they can speak with foreigners; continue their study to the university and enter English department; join the competitions like debate and speech; teach other people; apply for job in the office; study abroad; speak with teacher and friends in the classroom; help them in understanding the English materials; be a leader in the future so that English speaking is needed; be a guide. The students’ most dominant expectation is they expect that they are able to talk with foreigners.
