Abstract

The writing of this thesis entitled “ Symbolic Features in George Elliot’s novel “The Mill on The Floss’ aims at understanding the meaning of each symbol which are applied in the novel. The Mill on The Floss with its amazing story keeps many symbols as its messages conveyor element. The data of this thesis are obtained from primary data: the novel and secondary data: through library study. In order to analyze the data, the writer of this thesis applied bibliographical resources analisys. Based on the analysis result, the writer of this thesis classified the symbol into two general divisions they are: animate and inanimate symbol. Animate symbol is the symbol that attach in living thing while the symbol which is put in unliving thing is particularly called inanimate symbol. Symbol in characters and animals are catagorized into animate symbol while symbol in the object, place, family and condition are included to the latter category.
