Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the strategies and those advantages and disadvantage of the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching English reading comprehension at the third year students of M.A Nurul Haramain Putri Narmada. The writer uses Descriptive method in this study. The populations of this study are the teachers who teach English Reading Comprehension in the third year students of M.A Nurul Haramain Putri Narmada. The writer uses three texts as sample: The Prince and the snake, The Golden Egg, and The Ugly Tree. Based on the result from observation and interview, the writer found the strategies; Brainstorming strategy, Vocabulary knowledge rating strategy, Silent reading strategy, Reading aloud strategy, Bottom up strategy, Task mastering strategy, and debate strategy. All those strategies are applied based on the following strengths and weakness; Brainstorming strategy was good enough to be used because the strategy create interest and make the students able to got the main points from the text but this strategy was spending much time to making prediction. Vocabulary knowledge rating strategy helped students to increase their vocabulary but not at all of students could ask and discussed with the teacher; sometimes the other students opened the dictionary in order to find the meaning of the words. Silent reading strategy was good enough to make the students got the general and specific information about the texts but this strategy makes the pace slower. Reading aloud strategy helped the teacher easy to diagnose each student’s reading ability but not at all of students got the opportunity to read. Bottom up strategy helped students to practice student’s ability in vocabulary mastery but could make classroom crowded and disturb the other classes. Task mastering strategy helped the students to practice their understanding about the text through the exercises but time allocation to doing the exercises was limited and sometimes many of students could not finished the exercises. Debate strategy helped students to express their ideas and their opinion about the text but sometimes students could not controlled their emotions when their opinion was be opposite by the other students.
