Abstract

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It has a certain amount of dominance over other global languages like Chinese and Arabic because most of the world was once a colony of England and these countries still retain schooling in English. It would not be a mistake to count English as one of the common languages of India or Singapore or Hong Kong for example. Also in many former of the UK which had a lot of native languages, English is maintained as a lingua franca or common language. This is true in parts of Africa and the South Pacific for example, where different villages and tribes speak different native languages, so when they speak to each other, they speak English.
