Abstract

This study aims to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the textbook materials based on the curriculum and students opinion. The study identifies the textbook that is being used in SMPN 2 Kediri base on Curriculum guidelines (KTSP) and students’ opinion. Fifty students from two classes (class VIII A and class VIII B) of second grade students are involved. These fifty (50) students represent 42% out of the whole population of second grade students in SMPN 2 Kediri (total 119 students). The data are collected from document (textbook) and questionnaire (students’ perspective). Descriptive quantitative method is used in analyzing the data. The data is divided into two parts. The first data comes from the availability of materials in textbook with the curriculum guidelines. The second data comes from students’ opinion in answering the 34 questioner about the textbook. In general, the textbook cover 54.05% the guideline given in curriculum. The textbook has several strengths and several weaknesses. The strengths of Developing Competence In English Book are: reasonable price, attractive design, clear usage, present communicative activity, understandable language usage, without negative stereotypes, presenting 4 basic skills, fully color textbook with some picture, appropriate language level with the students, and appropriate with curriculum. The weaknesses of Developing Competence In English Book are: not up to date, no additional material, presents difficult grammar and ununderstanable symbol of phonetic spelling for students, not introduce specific qualification for students just like listening for gist, note taking, skimming for information, etc, presents some unmatch activities, not organized effectively, unfamiliar publisher, presents key answer on the textbook.
