Abstract

This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Figurative Language Used in Lyrics of Selected Scorpion Songs attempted to describe the types and meaning of figurative language. The Figurative Language is focused on metaphor, metonymy, simile and personification by firstly analysing the general meaning and theme of the songs. The data of study were acquired from two Scorpion’s Album. Those are Love at The First Sting and Face The Heat. The data are analysed by applying descriptive analytic method. This research found that: (1) The three Scorpion songs—Still Loving You, Under the Same Sun and Coming Home, apply four types of figurative language namely metaphor, personification, simile and metonymy (2) The function of the four types figurative language those are to add, to colour, to persuade and to make the lyrics more dramatic (3) The meaning carried by the four types of figurative language is explained contextually based on the songs. In the first song, metonymy is carried the description of the love barriers. In the second song “Under the Same Sun”. The figurative meanings that are carried in metaphor and personification covers the casualties of the war. In the third song, it equally compares the notion “being on the stage” and “coming home”. On the other hand Personification is used to stress the beginning of the trip to the concert where the character wants to play music in. In the fifth line, metaphor is carried the meaning that “home” is an analogue of “being on the stage”. Meanwhile metonymy—the dominant type of figurative language found in this song implicitly states “the same place where men live on”. The last type of figurative language in this song is personification. .(4) The dominant type used of figurative language that mostly found is personification, then metonymy in the second position as well as metaphor and simile come after.
