Abstract

This thesis deals with the derivational prefix employed in Sumbawa Besar Dialect. The study is aimed to identify the types of derivational prefix employed in Sumbawa Besar Dialect and to describe the morpho-syntactic function of prefix derivation in Sumbawa Besar Dialect. The data were obtained through literature of Sumbawa Besar dialect, recording and transcription, and performing cross check technique with the informants to judge on the data acceptability. Then, the obtained data were analysed descriptively. The research result shows that there are seven types of derivational prefix are employed in Sumbawa Besar dialect; prefix {ba-}, {ra~}, {ka~}, {sa~}, {pa~}, {ma~}, and {ga~}. Prefix {ba~} consists of allomorph {ba~} and {bar~} derives noun base to verb. Prefix {ra~} with allomorph {ra~} derives noun base to verb, allomorph {raN~ ran}, {ra~N raη}, {raN~ ram}, and {raN~ rañ} derive verb base to adjective. Prefix {ka~} with allomorph {ka~} derives adjective to noun, allomorph {kaN~ kaη} and {kaN~ kam} derives noun base to verb, and allomorph { kaN~ kan} derives verb base to noun. Prefix {sa~} with allomorph {sa~}, {saN~ saη}, and {saN~ saηə} derive adjective to verb. Prefix {pa~} with allomorph {pa~}, {paN~ pam}, {paN~ pan}, {paN~ pañ}, {paN~ paη}, {par~}, and {pal~} derive verb to noun. Prefix {ma~} derives noun to verb, and prefix {gan~} does not alter the grammatical category of the base. However, it changes the meaning of the base.
