Abstract
This thesis entitled Code Switching in The Radio Conversation. A Case Study at GSP Radio Show 101.8 FM is a qualitative descriptive study. This study investigated code switching used by callers and announcers in radio conversation. The population were the callers around Mataram.The data were collected by using tape recorder and note taking. The result of this study indicated that (1) radio conversation covered 11.51% English, 0.60% Balinese, and 0.50% Sasak. (2) the use of Balinese and of Sasak in code switching between broadcaster and callers implicitly describe the speakers’ intention to show his or her community that they belong to in order to get along well with the listeners. Meanwhile, English code switching is used in greeting and caring that shows the intimacy in the conversation. (3) There were four types of code switching used by the broadcasters and the callers in the radio conversation, namely: Inter-sentential code switching, intra-sentential code switching, intra-lexical mixing and inter-textual mixing, (4) eight reasons of code switching found namely; expressing group identity 9.68%, being emphatic about something 4.84%, clarification 3.22%, interjection 3.22%, repetition used for clarification 8.06%, talking about a particular topic 37.10%, to soften or strengthen request or command 27.42% and because of real lexical need 6.45%.
