Abstract

This study entitled “Communicative Patterns among Brahmana and non Brahmana community: a case study at Pagesangan Selatan”. The study was conducted to answer the questions: (1) what are the communicative patterns among Brahmana and non Brahmana community at Pagesangan Selatan and (2) what are the factors that influence the communicative patterns among Brahmana and non Brahmana community at Pagesangan Selatan. The population of this study is 666 people in which 123 of them are Brahman, 107 are Ksatria, 230 are Wesya, 150 are Sudra and 56 non Balinese. The community is still tied to traditional social stratification. Therefore the member of the community are socially categorized into Brahman and non Brahman group or noble and non noble group. The samples were nineteen people. The method of collecting data was cluster sampling technique. The result of this study shows that each of the four social groups in Balinese community is addressed with different speech styles. Basa Utame or high style is addressed to Brahmana, Basa Madya or middle style is addressed to Ksatria, Basa Jaba with some Alus variation is addressed to Wesya, and Basa Jaba or low style to Sudra. The use of Utama has changed because it is not only used to address the nobles but also used to address non nobles with important roles in the community (i.e. Pemangku). Basa Utama is not used by younger generation resulting from solidarity and closeness among them. There were two other factors determining the communicative patterns among the community, i.e. topics and settings.
