Abstract

The thesis entitled UKM argUMent ( A Debate Club at The University of Mataram) : Student’s Perceptions and Expectations was written; a) to find out English learning programs provided by UKM argUMent; b) to find out students' perception in UKM argUMent program: c) to find out students' expectation towards UKM argUMent programs in improving their skill. This study used descriptive method. The sampling technique was random sampling which consisted of 31 students of University of Mataram who come from different major. Then, the data were collected by observation, questionnaire distribution and interview. This study found that UKM argUMent maintained many activities to improve English and personal skill. In addition, the result of this study exposed that large number of students indicated satisfaction towards student activities in UKM argUMent. It created and maintained strong English environment which enable students to employ English continuously. Then, UKM argUMent also built high motivation learning atmosphere to get more achievement as well as academic and non-academic experience in campus life. Moreover, the students also approved that UKM argUMent have significant influence on students‟ interest and skills. Furthermore, the students showed interest in learning specific English skill and were supposed to have opportunity to evolve working skill for future job. However, students perceived that many programs caused the implementation of some program not run well. They supposed UKM argUMent maximalize the implementation of English activities to lead them mastering English.
