Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Ability in Using Collocation: A Study at The Fourth Semester Students of English Education Program FKIP UNRAM in Academic Year 2017/2018” was written to find out the students’ ability in using collocation. The population of this research was the 4th semester students of English Education Program at FKIP UNRAM. There were 30 students taken as the sample using nonprobability convenience sampling technique. The researcher administrated a test as the instrument of the study. After the researcher collected and analyzed the data, the result of the study showed that 20% of students were categorized as very poor, 16.67% categorized poor, 23.33% categorized as sufficient, 20% categorized as good, and 20% categorized as excellent. The lexical collocation of “adjective + noun” held the highest score of 29.63%. The second least errors that students made in collocation was on “verb + noun” lexical collocation with score of 25.92% . Next, the score percentage on “adverb + adjective” showed the total of 22.62%. Last, the least percentage of the right answers found in lexical collocation of “verb + adverb” with the percentage of 21.83%. The result of the study showed that the fourth semester students had sufficient ability in using collocation as proven by the mean score of 63.58 with the percentage of students who reached this number were 63.33% in score category of sufficient, good, and excellent, and students who got lower score in very poor and poor categories were 36.67%.
