Abstract

The research is intended to find out the forms of dialectal variation of Bimanese language, especially Serasuba dialect. It focuses on the phonology and lexical properties of this language. The data were collected through interviews, note taking, and recording, the total informants of this study were 20 people taken from 10 villages in Dompu. This study used comparative intra lingua method in analyzing the data. The result of this study, declared that the numbers of Bimanese phonemes were 27, consisting of 5 vocals and 22 consonants. The 5 vocals were /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/, /a/. Then, the 21 consonants were /p/, /b/, /Ь/, /f/, /d/, /đ/, /t/, /c/, /j/, /k/, /g/, /q/, /s/, /h/, /m/, /n/, /ň/, /ŋ/, /r/, /l/, /w/, /y/ and interestingly, these variations mostly between people living in urban and rural areas, they show differentiation resulting from social class and geography. Vowel raising also occur in this language, for instance in word kadondo /a/ ~ kedondo /e/ ~ kdondo /φ/. At least, results of this study are expected to accomplish any previous study on Bimanese dialectal variation.
