Abstract

This study aims to find out factors cause the difficulty of learning speaking at eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Kediri Academic Year 2010/2011, the difficulties related to their intrinsic and extrinsic factors . There were fifty six students participated in this study as the samples, 24 students from VIII C and 32 students from VIII C, and only eight students randomly for interview among those fifty six students who responded to the questionnaire. The data in this study was gained through observation, questionnaire and interview. The data obtained was then analized by identiflying the problems from the observation, questionnaire, interview and then the data from questionnaire is calculated. The result of this study showed that there were problems or difficulties that students faced in learning speaking. Based on the result, it was found that there were many factors that students faced. The factors were divided into two categories; intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In this study, the major factor that is dominant is intrinsic factor such as the students were lack in vocabularies, the students not master in grammar, the students had difficulties in pronunciation, students could not arrange words into sentences that they wanted to produce, the students did not have strategies to increase their speaking skill, the students were afraid to make mistakes when they speak English with their friends and the students were shy to speak English. Extrinsic factor such as they were rarely practiced and even never practiced English and there were not sufficient facilities that the school prepared.
