Abstract

This research investigates the use of SQ4R method in improving the reading ability of the eight grade students of SMPN 4 Mataram. The subject of the study is the eighth grade of students in class VIII-1 of SMPN 4 Mataram in academic year 2011/2012 that consist of 35 students (17 girls and 18 boys). This research used descriptive qualitative and quantitave method in analyzing students test result. The study was conducted in two cycles of sequencing actions. Each cycle consists of four activities; planning, action, observation and reflection. In cycle 1, the students used the SQ4R method which offers the students to apply the steps in it. The result is 74.28% students passed the test. It was below the target of minimum mastery standard 75%. The students’ problem in cycle 1 was that they had difficulties in applying the step of SQ4R and they asked their friends opinion to apply the steps. They had to do the task with their friends and discussed the reading materials. Then, in cycle 2 the researcher asked the students to work in pairs (interactive students) to make the condition more active. The percentage of classical result that was 88.57% revealed that it was higher than 75%, thus the students were successful. It was then concluded that the use of SQ4R method does improve the students’ ability in reading descriptive text.
