Abstract
This particular investigation is aimed at finding out the utilization of English movie as a teaching media in improving students’ speaking ability at grade XII Bahasa of SMA NW Pancor academic year 2011/2012. There were 19 students of XII Bahasa involved in this study. The study is a classroom action research that used two cycles. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative and quantitative method in analyzing students’ test result. Qualitative method was used to analyze the observation result, and Quantitative method was used to analyze the students test result. The data are based on the criteria standard score that is applied in SMA NW Pancor. The teaching learning process is said successful if 70% of students gained the minimum score of 70. The pre-test informed that the mean score was 58.53 with 36.84% of the students gained the minimum target of 70. The data in cycle one informed that the mean score was 67.21 and 57.89% students gained the minimum target of 70. The result of cycle two informed that the mean score was 79.53 with 89.47% learning mastery. The data showed that there were improvements in every cycle. Thus, the researcher concludes that the use of English movie as teaching media is effective in improving students’ speaking ability at grade XII Bahasa of SMA NW Pancor.
