Abstract

This case study entitled “Students’ Grammatical Competence in Using Modals (must and have to)” is aimed to find out the extends to which students are able to use modals must and have to and the difficulties they are facing. The sample of this research was 36 students. The data were analyzed by quantitative and qualitative procedure. The research finding showed: 1) The second year students of SMKN 1 Kuripan are able to use modals must and have to with level fairly good. This can be proven with the mean scores of the students is 62.05; in percentage: the students who reached scores between 56-100 is 80.56% or 29 students which mean that they ‘pass’. Meanwhile, there are 7 students or 19.44% who reached scores between 0-55 which mean that they ‘fail’. 2) The most problem’s resources is related to the students’ whom difficult in using modals must and have to especially to identify when and in what context the modals should be used. The students have more difficulties in using modals have to than must. The result of the questionnaire describes that most of the students gave incorrect answer when they answered about the function and the negative form of modals have to (question number 4 and 6), and some of the students give the same answer when they explain about the function and the negative form of modals must and have to . It is strengthened by the result of the students test given answer. The Result also describe that some of the students gave wrong answer about modals have to or always choose modals must to answer all of the items test. Most of the students give wrong answer about modals have to or always choose modals must in answer all of the items test. It happens because when the researcher observed the class, the researcher found that the teacher often used the lecture’s strategies when explaining the topic, mostly without involving the students in the activities. The teacher also give the students limited exercise about the topic.
