Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the English textbooks used for junior high school at SMPN 3 Pringgarata. The data were collected by using document, interview, and questionnaire. English Teachers, Headmaster and all of students in grade eigth(VIII) as the sample. There were three classes involved in this research (VIIIa, VIIIb, and VIIIc), through document the researcher take some samples of the texts from the English textbooks and analyzes it, the aims of this method is in order to find out do the textbooks’ materials match with the objectives of a given English language curriculum (KTSP), and also are the textbooks appropriate for teachers, students, and the curriculum. Trough interview the data is collected by interviewing the English teachers and the Headmaster, and the last the researcher gave the questionnaire to the students and the teachers. It is found that “English In Focus” cover 84,79% competencies offered and suggested for junior high school grade eight (VIII) by KTSP for English lesson. The rest 15,21% materials in “English In Focus”does not cover these competencies. The English language teachers at SMPN 3 Pringgarata grade eight (VIII) use some criteria that related to some aspect such as, materials, school’s condition, price, and publisher. And the stengths of “English In Focus” are the books appropriate with the curriculum, not present negative stereotypes, printed in good paper,and soo on. on the other hand the weaknesses of this book is not organized effectively,no additional materials,and not all contents of the books are suitable for teaching and learning context.
