Abstract
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+); is a medium to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission by creating financial values for the carbon in forests and improving forest management. Lombok Island is one of the small island Eastern lndonesia with the forest degradation rate of 30% (1990-2010) and has hight potency of GHG reduction and cimate change mitigation. Facing also the heavy socio-econimic problems such as poverty, lack of land and unemployment, REDD+ mechanism opporfunity for the island of Lombok to reduce its rate of deforestation and forest degradation at the same time to improve the community welfare. However, the basic concept of REDD is market-based, which is still problematic to implement in developing countries as Indonesia. Thus how to implement the concept of REDD+ in Lombok is still question. The technology in carbon accounting, payment mechanism, accountable mechanism funding are some of many challenges that should be answered in realizing the concept of REDD+ into practice. We will discuss the current challenges of implementing REDD+ projects and suggest possible ways to overcome those challenges.
