Abstract

This Thesis entitled The Development of the Main Character in the Movie Into The Wild: A Psychological Approach has two objecives of study. The first is to describe the characterization of the main character in Into The Wild. The second is to explain the impact of the conflict to psychological state of the main character. To obtain the object of this research, the writer used psychological approach through Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of personality and Sigmun Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis. It is used to understand the characterization of Christopher McCandless and the impact of the conflict to the psychological state of the main character. Christopher McCandless is the object of this analysis. The methodologies used in this reasearch are observation and documentation. The technic of collecting data is qualitative method. The result gained from this study are (1) The description of Christopher McCandless’ characteristic is smart, stubborn, an adventurer, idealistic, and caring. The character of the main character is called a round character, which can be seen from the way he acts, his character had developed along his journey, and (2) The conflict faced by Christopher McCandless as the main character is psychological conflict. His family conflict has influenced his mind set, behaviour, and attitude.
