Abstract

The breakdown of Saudi Arabia and Iranian bilateral relations in 2016 was a sign of tension that were straining between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The constructive conflict has always affected relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, especially since 1979. The Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979 was an event that became the starting point where the relations between the two countries became tense. After the revolution, Iran made Shiite as its ideology and the basis of his country. According to constructivism, the changing identity of Iran into a theocratic state of Shiite has changed the way Saudi Arabia and Iran view each other. This is due to the ideological conflict held by the two countries, Saudi Arabia with the Sunnis, and Iran with Shiite. The debate affected relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran as well as relations between the two countries in the Middle East. This study aims to explain that the root cause of the tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran in the Middle East is due to non-material factors. In this research, the author describes the history of the formation of Sunni-Shiites, the implementation of ideologies in Saudi Arabia and Iran, and relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran after the Iranian Revolution. Next, the author analyzes them with a constructivist approach to better understand conflictual relations between the two countries. This study uses qualitative research methods and the method of data collection through reference literature studies.
