Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of the effectiveness of applying an eclectic method in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text at second year student of SMPN 2 Labuapi A.Y 2010/2011. It was aimed at answering the research question “Is the application of an eclectic method effective to be used in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text at second year students’ of SMPN 2 Labuapi A.Y. 2010/2011?”. The population of this study was the VIII grade students of SMPN 2 Labuapi. The sample of this study was the students of class VIII/B as the experimental group and VIII/C as the control group with the total sample 70 students from both classes. The study was conducted starting from giving pre-test, treatment, and then post-test. In the process of treatment, both groups were treated differently. The experimental group was treated using an eclectic method, while the control group was treated using Grammar Translation Method. The result of the test showed that the mean score of the experimental group was 25.74, it was higher than the mean score of the control group which was 11.4. It was also supported by the t-test gained which was 2.37, it was higher than t-table at the confidence level of .05 (95%) Therefore, the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Thus, it should be altered into the Alternate Hypothesis (Ha). It means that an eclectic is effective to be used in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text for second year students at SMPN 2 Labuapi academic year 2010/2011. Based on the findings, it is suggested that eclectic method can be used by the English teacher as a method in teaching, especially in teaching a descriptive text.
