Abstract

This study aims to identify the effectiveness of language games in helping the teachers in teaching English vocabulary and at knowing the factors that may contribute to the effectiveness of language games in teaching English vocabulary. The research took four weeks in experimental class and control class with using experimental research. This research applied population sample which the total of experiment class is 32 students and control class is 32 students. While experimental class was treated by using games and control class was treated by conventional technique. To know the effectiveness of language games, the writer presented pre-test and post-test as the instrument. The result was analyzed by using the statistical analysis under the identification of t-test formula. The result showed that the mean score of experimental class is higher than the control class. There were 27.3 which is higher than the mean score value of students who were taught by using method of non game, 12.5. When to be compared between score of t-test with score of t-table the result (t-test) is 4.95 this is higher than of t-table at confidence level of .05 with 2.000 and at confidence level of .01 equals to 2.660 in degree of freedom (df) 62.It means that Ho which states that the language games are not effective in teaching English vocabulary was rejected and Ha which states that the language games are effective in teaching English vocabulary was accepted. It means that the use of language games in teaching English vocabulary is effective. Language game can be used in teaching language skills or language elements; it is also more practical in accompanying the teachers in delivering her materials as well as in helping the learners to comprehend and to understand better as result of motivation encouraged by such a technique. It is also suggested to the English language teacher to be more carefully in choosing or selecting, using, and maybe producing language games.
