Abstract

Translation is one of important skill needed by students in order to support their english competence. This thesis is written to achieve some objectives: (1) to find out students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs, (2) to find out problems do the students face in translating phrasal verbs. It is descriptive study, involving 31 students as samples of the research. The data were collected by using test and interview. The test consists of 20 multiple choices, 10 matching phrasal verbs and 20 translate sentences. The data are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result of the analysis shows that the there are 4 students out of 31 students got score 85 – 100% (12.90%) are categorized “very high”, 10 students got score 75 – 84% (32.25%) who are categorized “high”, 12 students got score 60 – 74% (38.70%) who categorized “sufficient”, and 5 students got score 40- 59% (16.12%) who categorized “low”. So the students’ average translations are categorized sufficient. Besides that, mostly students confront difficulties in translating phrasal verb because they are confused about the meaning of phrasal verbs and the structure of combination verb and particle. Although the translation categorized sufficient, students should improve and practice more in translation so that they can improve their translation quality.
