Abstract

This final project was about the use of English folktales to improve students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students at the first semester of SMPN 23 Mataram in academic year 2010/2011. The objectives of this study are to find out whether there are significant differences in vocabulary achievement between students who are taught by English folktales and those are who taught without English folktales and to know whether teaching vocabulary by using English folktales could improve students’ vocabulary achievement at the second year students at the first semester of SMPN 23 Mataram academic year 2010/2011. In order to achieve the objective of this research, the writer designed an experimental study and chose pre-test post test design with two treatments. The writer took two classes, one as an experimental group and the other as a control group that consisted of 38 students each. In analyzing the data, the writer used statistical analysis with t-test formula. The result of this study showed that the students in the experimental group got better improvement in vocabulary achievement than the control group in their average scores in post test. It was supported by the significant difference between t-value and the critical value, that the t-value was higher than the critical value. Based on this finding, it is suggested that English folktales can be used by the teachers to improve students’ vocabulary achievement.
