Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the effect of using picture-based games in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The samples of this research were the eighth grade students’ of SMPN 1 Lingsar. The samples were divided in two groups; experimental group (8.2) and control group (8.4). Each group consisted of 25 students and the total numbers of the sample were 50 students. The writer collected the data by using pre-test, treatment and post-test procedure. For pre-test and post-test the subject were tested with 30 multiple-choice items. The writer analyzed the data by using quantitative method. The deviation score of the experimental group was 783 and the control group was 523. After getting the deviation score of pre-test and post-test, the mean score of two groups are computed. It was found that the students’ mean deviation in the experimental group (31.32) was higher than that in the control group (20.92). With t-test analysis the value was 3.537 and it was higher than the critical value of t-table at confidence level of 0.05 (2.011) and 0.01 (2.682) with degree of freedom (df) 48 (50-2). It can be concluded that the use of picture-based games is significantly effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery of eight grade students of SMPN 1 Lingsar in academic year 2010/2011. Thus the null hypothesis (Ho) which states “The use of picture-based games is not effective in improving students’ vocabulary” is rejected. Consequently, it has to be altered into alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states “The use of picture-based games is effective in improving students’ vocabulary”.
