Abstract

The thesis entitled “The use of Sumbawanese Metaphors and Similes A Case Study: At Rempe Village, W.S.” aims to find out the metaphors and similes used by Sumbawanese when they get involved in communication of one another, as well as the contexts, and the values of their use. To collect the data, a recorder and questionnaire were used as the instruments and the recorded data were transcribed in a written form. The population of this study is all the speakers in Sumbawanese especially at Rempe Villge, W.S and the samples are 20 individuals through questionnaire and recording. The finding of this research is there are 21 metaphors and similes found which consist of 13 proverbial phrases (metaphor) and 8 proverbial comparisons (simile.). This research use interpretative and qualitative methods. The finding of this research is that metaphors and similes are used to give advice, suggestion and criticism. Those metaphors and similes contained moral educational, social and religious values. Due to these values, metaphors and similes often used to guide the Sumbawanese living at Rempe Village. The conclusion of this research is that metaphors and similes used by Sumbawanese in certain context to educate socialize and teach the younger generation. In making comparison, metaphors and similes use the name of animals, plants, things and part of human body as the symbols. From this research, the readers can take the good values from metaphors and similes so that they can apply it in social lives in order to get a better condition in social life.
