Abstract

This study was a case study about Troublesome Words in learnng Grammar. It aimed to find out the university students’ ability in comprehending Troublesome Words and whether Troublesome Words assist them in learning Grammar. The subjects were the sixth semester students of English Department at FKIP UNRAM in academic year 2010-2011. In this study the writer used Descriptive-Quantitative method. The data were collected through test and interview. The data obtained were analyzed through four steps; collected the university students’ answers on the test, sorted and scored the university students’ works, put the scores into charts of rate, and the last was analyzed the result. The test was conducted on April 25th 2011 at 09.20 a.m. The test consisted of 25 questions with three optional answers (a, b or c). The result showed that the sixth semester students were able in comprehending Troublesome Words. It was proved by the result of the test. From 36 university students there are 17 university students (47,2%) got scores between the ranges 56-65. It was meant that almost half students obtained fairly good scores on the test. There were 13 university students (36,1%) got good scores and there were no university students got very low scores. Meanwhile, only 4 university students got very good scores that was between the range 80-100. In addition, the mean score of the sixth semester students ability of Troublesome Words was 67. It was categorized as a good level. The second method in collecting data was interview. This interview conducted on April 27th 2011. This interview was involving 12 of 36 university students at the sixth semester. Based on the interview result, it could be inferred that university students often confused with the Troublesome Words. Due to the similar sound and appearance, they often made error in choosing the correct Troublesome Words. Besides, they did not use English as their mother tongue so they could not learn and practice their knowlegde in daily life. Furthermore, they stated that Troublesome Words could assist them in learning Grammar because Troublesome Words topic has changed their mind about Grammar as a boring and serious subject. By learning Troublesome Words, they believed that Grammar could be mastered.
