Abstract

This research was intended to find out students’ difficulties on their English oral test in Nurul Haramain boarding school for girls that faced twice in a year. The data were gathered through audio recording of the students of X grade students who took an oral test for the first time in this boarding school. From this grade, there were three different classes chosen and 15 students were selected randomly from each class. The students’ speaking abilities on their test were identified through assessment category such as Fluency, Pronunciation and Accent, Vocabulary, Grammar and Details (Description). From the data, there were 4 speaking problems found among the students: the hesitancy in speaking, the inappropriate pronunciation, the lack vocabulary and the noticeable grammatical errors. The most serious problem was on students’ grammar performance exactly on their sentence structure used during speaking, however, students did better performance on their vocabulary and details (description) given, fluency, pronunciation and accent. Overall, the students were categorized as doing “good enough” performance which identified based on the rubric speaking assessment. The result of this study hopefully can provide useful information that can be used by students and others to improve their speaking skills especially for increasing their achievement in speaking assessment.
