Abstract

A Sociolinguistics Study of Minang, Maminang The Movie is the representation of women and power in Minangkabau Culture. This study is aimed at; (1) finding out how language in the film Minang Maminang represent women and power, (2) finding out how gender and power of Minang men and women contrasted in the film Minang, Maminang. It uses descriptive qualitative as its research design. Observation the movie was carried out in order to collect the data. There were six main characters participated in the movie. The results of this study indicated the language in the film Minang, Maminang represents women and power in the different way. The language used in this film shows many aspects of the Minang society including the position of women and women’s power. The authorized language tends to be more adhered to women who at the same time as the one who has the authoritative power in the Minang society. The power of Minang women is given by the society based on the social structural and it creates a level and language. It is also found that the differences in language use create contrasts between men and women’s language. Some terms of language which are supposed to be women’s terms are used by men such as intimacy, understanding and proposal. Other terms such as status and conflict which are supposed to be men’s terms are used by women.
