Abstract
This research entitled “An Analysis on EFL Teachers’ Problems in Creating Positive Learning Climate: A Study at Junior High Schools in Mataram” was aimed to analyze problems facing English teachers of Junior High Schools in Mataram during the process of teaching English , the factors that might contribute to such problems, and the solutions to overcome such problems. This research used descriptive qualitative method with interview and observation as means of data collection where pre-determined theme was applied. The result of the study revealed that there were some problems that the teachers face in creating a positive learning climate for students, namely: 1) Problems related to Classroom management, 2) Problems related to Instructions, 3) Problems related to Intrapersonal relationships, each followed by sub themes. The factors contributing to such problems were 1) lack of students’ interest in learning English due to fear of making mistakes, 2) lack of teachers’ innovation in teaching methodology, 3) Inadequate training received by teachers 4) Lack of students’ involvement and exposure to relevant subject, for instance a topic students can relate to. Solutions to overcome those problems are 1) Apply pedagogical knowledge and learn how to engage better with students, 2) add more interesting materials and activities, 3) more training for the teachers especially in designing materials.
