Abstract

The construction of refrigerators that use freon is usually still big. Therefore, the freon refrigerators are heavy and difficult as portable refrigeration devices. Besides that, freon refrigerators still need high power, while the freon can damage the ozone. One refrigerator that does not use freon or artificial refrigerant is thermoelectric refrigerator. Thermoelectric refrigerator performance is still low so that it needs to be investigated to improve its performance. One way to increase the thermoelectric performance is to replace the unit removing the heat. In this study, the heat removal unit is operated using water. This research uses 1 thermoelectric module type TEC1-12706 with an overall size of 40 mm x 40 mm x 3,74 mm. The module was placed on the top side of mini refrigerator. The refrigerator dimension was 24,5 cm x 20 cm x 28,5 cm. The data in the test were recorded using a DAQ MX 9714 NI data logger that was connected to a PC using the LabView program. The water mass flow rates were varied; 5 g/s, 10 g / s, and 15 g/s and the electric power used was 41,87 W with water cooling load of 360 ml. The results show that experiments without drinking water, the higher mass flow rate used does not guaranty to increase the refrigerator performance. Using ANOVA analysis, the refrigerator performance such as COP, in this research is not affected by the mass flow rate of the coolant. This can be due to the lower variations of the coolant mass flow rate employed.
