Abstract

This paper aims at mapping small and medium size enterprises in Lombok-Indonesia by exploring their level of relational capability and organisational culture, which consists of learning, market and entrepreneurial orientations. The orientations were reported by various authors as the determinants of relational capability. The respondents were artshop owners which were purposively selected and interviewed in sixteen handicraft centres throughout the island since they were assumed to have a great potential contribution to the development of the tourism industry. They were grouped into five based on their product. The finding of the study was that pearlcraft group shows the best position with the highest level of organisational cultural orientations and relational capability. The position suggested the best combinations of organisational culture and relational capability. The other handicraft groups however indicated a fair combination. They faced a negative trend after bom Bali II and the business seemed to be dying. This study provides an understanding that organisation cultural orientations may lead to relational capability and that the better the culture the better relational capability.
