Abstract

This study deals with students’ strategies in learning English vocabulary at second semester of English department of FKIP UNRAM in academic year 2010/2011. The research aimed at finding out kinds of strategies in learning English which were used by the students; among those strategies, which ones are dominantly used by the students. All of the students at second semester as the population were taken as the sample in this study (fifty six students was the total number of three classes). To get the data; interviews and questionnaire techniques were used. The interview was used to identify students’ strategies in learning English vocabulary, while the questionnaire was used to know which strategies are dominantly used among other strategies. In analyzing the data, qualitative descriptive method was applied. The result of the study showed that there are ten strategies used by the students, such as expanding their reading, watching English movies, listening to English music, operating electronic games in English providing in computer, using dictionary when they find difficult word, making a definition of vocabulary, designing vocabulary visual games, sticking notes, recording their own voice, and re-reading it at least twice. And the most dominant strategies used by the students in learning English vocabulary is listening to English music with total percentage 98, 21 %.
