Abstract

This research entitled “The Use of Subject Verb Agreement in Students’ English Writing: A Case Study at Fourth Semester Students of English Department of Mataram University in Academic Year 2017/2018” was aimed at finding out the types of errors and their causes. This research focused on the errors of subject verb agreement analyzing the errors of subject verb agreement produced by students of English education program of University Mataram in academic year 2017-2018. This research aimed to answer three research questions. 1) What are they types of subject verb agreement produced by the students? 2) What is the most frequent type of subject verb agreement produced by the students? 3) What are the causes of subject verb agreement produced by the students? The researcher conducted a document analysis research. As a qualitative research, the results of the analysis were interpreted in the form of descriptive data. Twenty eight documents of students essay were the instruments in this research. The data were analyzed based on surface structure taxonomy. The results showed the type of errors were classified into omission errors (21 errors or 24,4 %), addition errors (6 errors or 6,97%), misformation errors (59 errors or 86,6 %). By using Jame’s theory of possible causes of errors, there were two possible sources of errors appeared. The first was errors which were resulted from interlingual process. The second was intralingual process.
