Abstract
Background: Academic achievement is an ability that can be observed in individuals who have learned. Academic achievement is influenced by several factors. The factor that most influences academic achievement is academic motivation. Academic motivation is a strength, which is to be able to start and support activities to achieve goals and achieve academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to know the relationship between academic motivation and academic achievement. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Students’ academic motivation is assessed using the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) questionnaire. Students’ main block examination results, score of tutorial and students’ medical skills examination result simultaneously represent academic achievement. As many as 202 of the total 216 students (93.52%) participated in this study, namely students in the 2nd , 3rd and 4th year of education. Data analysis was using parametric correlative statistical test of Pearson. Results: The highest average of AMS total score is the extrinsic motivation score is 63.37. Correlation value shows that there is no significant relationship between intrinsic motivation (r = 0.023 and P = 0.748) and extrinsic motivation (r = 0.001 and P = 0.989) within academic achievement and there is a negative but weak correlation between amotivation within academic achievement (r = - 0.147 and P = -0.147). Conclusion: There is no statistically significant relationship between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation within academic achievement, but there is a weak negative relationship that is statistically significant between motivation and academic achievement.
