Abstract

This study aims at finding out the types of figurative language in the oral language that is used by Indonesian football commentator that is Valentino Simanjuntak script on his football commentary on AFF Cup U18 in 2017. research aims at finding out the types of figurative. The researcher limits the five types of figurative languages: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia. This study refers to Sharndama and Suleiman (2013) stated that “Figurative languages are employed in performing arts as a medium of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas implicitly rather than explicitly”. Meanwhile, Nuriadi (2016) said that “Figurative languages are the language or expression used verbally in order to describe or figure out one intention, idea, or message of one speaker”. Therefore, this study showed the feeling or action in football match that convey by commentator by using figurative languages. The result of this study shows from the commentary of two football matches, there are forty two figurative languages found. Then, the use of metaphor is dominant which is 45% and followed by onomatopoeia 26%, simile 12%, hyperbole 10% and the last is personification 7%.
