Abstract

This study entitled “A Study of English Department Students’ Difficulties in Writing Thesis Year 2018/2019”. This study has been conducted with the purpose to describe the difficulties and the causes of those difficulties in writing their thesis. Quantitative research is a research design while a survey research is a procedure that was used in this study. Hence, the instrument used were questionnaire and interview. The population of this research was the students of English department in FKIP University of Mataram who were writing thesis year 2018/2019, while the total number of population were 184 students. The total number of the samples were 55 students which determined by random sampling technique. The result of the study revealed that the majority of the students who had difficulties in writing thesis was in writing Review of Related Literature chapter with a percentage of 22.2%. The causes were because the limited number of books in the library, expensive book prices in the bookstore and the sources from the internet were not complete. They also had less knowledge about how to paraphrase sentences from the sources. The second difficulty was in writing Findings and Discussion chapter with a percentage of 22%. The causes were the students difficult to analyze the data because they cannot use table, figure and other forms. The third was in writing Introduction chapter with a percentage of 20.3% because the students did not have enough knowledge about related subject and also they lacked of reasoning and writing abilities. Next was in writing Methodology chapter with a percentage of 19.7% because the students had less understanding about the content of this chapter. They did not learn enough about methodology, procedure and formula should be used to analyze the data. The last was in writing Conclusion chapter with a percentage of 15.8% because there were too many findings and discussion which make it difficult to summarize the study in a few short paragraphs clearly.
