Abstract
This study aimed to classify and discused the type, reason and factor of the using taboo words in Limitless movie. This is a qualitative ethnographic study, it applied a note taking in obtaining the data. This study collected the data from watching the movie and reading the subtitle of the movie. After that the data was identifying, classifying, describing and explaining based on theory. Therefore this study used Batistella (2005) theory to classify the type of taboo words, it divided the type of taboo words into four. Then to gain information about the reason of taboo words appeared by characters in the movie. It used wardhaugh (2006) theory which categorized into four. As for the factor of taboo word this study applied Hymes’s theory. The results of this research show that there are 21 taboo words found in Limitless the movie. There are four types of taboo word that found in Limitless the movie: profanity, obscenity, epithet and vulgarity. Furthermore, the reasons of using taboo word in this movie like to draw attention, to show contempt and to be provocative. On the other hand, there are some factors of using taboo word which found in the movies, such as settings, participants, ends, acts, keys instrumentalitas, norms and genres.
