Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the ability of the students to use articles a, an, and the in writing English sentence. The population of this research was the second year students of SMKN 1 Mataram in academic year 2018/2019 there are 202 students. The total sample used was 40 students. The instruments employed in this research were multiple choices and completion test and questionnaire. The data were subsequently interpreted and analyzed by quantitative-descriptive method. Quantitative method was used to determine the students’ ability, problems and sources of problem which may cause the students’ difficulties identified and analyzed descriptively. It was found that the result, of the data were: 1 student (2%) got score in the range of 80-100(very good), 6 students (15%) got scores in the range of 66-79 (good), 10 students (25%) got scores in the range of 56-65(fairly good),9 students (22.5%) got score in the range 46-55 (low),14 students (35%) got score in the range (0-45). 85% or 34 students (on the test result) have difficulties in using articles the. 65% or 26 students have problems related to the “material”, 15% or 6 students had problems related to “teacher”, 20% or 8 students had problems related to the ”teacher and material”.
