Abstract

The present study aimed at determining the difference between pragmatic understanding among the master,s degree students in Indonesia based on the fields of study and gender and exploring the causes of difficulties in Listening Part A TOEFL-like. The data were collected with TOEFL-like Listening Test, retrospective questionnaire and analyzed quantitatively. It shows: (1) There is a significant difference in understanding the pragmatic meaning among the master,s degree students in Listening Part A TOEFL-like based on the fields of study and gender; (2) There are five primary causes of pragmatic difficulty based on gender, namely, Speech Rate Delivery, Voice, Sentence Complexity, Mishearing, Colloquials, and Sound Clarity.
