Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the mentors’ perception toward the English student teachers’ professional performance in teaching practice to junior high schools (SMPN and MTsN) in Mataram. The subjects of this research were 10 English teachers who became mentors’ of English student teachers in Junior High School. This study used qualitative descriptive method where the data of this study were gathered through spreading out the questionnaire as the instruments of data collection. In this research used purposive sampling technique which is the schools are accessible and approachable. There are two kinds of data result in the questionnaires that is data percentage and data short answer question data as complement information in the form of criticism, suggestion and their expectation for the student teachers. The result shows that the mentors’ perception toward the English student teachers professional performance in teaching practice is positive on the pedagogical competence (the average score 80.5 %), positive in professional performance (the average score 73.5 %), Positive in personal competence (the average score 87.7 %), and positive in social competence (the average score 86.25%). In the short answer question data, the result shows that the student teachers has criticism on professional competences and pedagogical competences such as; lack in ability to expanding the lesson plan, lack in classroom management, lack in using variation methods of learning, lack in ability in expanding of materials, and lack in communication. The data result shows that the student teachers still need to improve their professional competences and pedagogical competences.
