Abstract

Motivation has long been identified as one of the main factors affecting English language teaching (Gardner, 1985). Gardner et,al (1985) stated that there are two types of motivation that are considered to have strong influence on the degree of learners‟ effort to learn English language. The first is instrumental motivation and the second one is integrative motivation. This study aims to find out and describe the extent and type of the eleventh grade students‟ of SMA MuhammadiyahMataram in Academic year 2018/2019. The instrument in this study was a 5 point Likert Scale which was adapted from the original point Likert Scale format of Gardner‟s Attitude/Motivation Test Battery, ranged from „Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree‟. Some of the questions used in the questionnaire were adopted from Prapphal‟s Attitudes Testing (Prapphal, 1981) to gather information on participants‟ motivation. There were 20 questions in the questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of two main parts: integrative motivation (items 1-10) and instrumental motivation (items 11-20). The totals of participants of this study were 48 students. The tabulated data were analyzed according to their means and percentage. The mean of each question item was used in order to interpret its motivational level using the Interpretation of Mean Scores. The data reveal that the eleventh grade students of SMA MuhammadiyahMataram have a high level of motivation to learn English and appear to be slightly more motivated by integrative motivation than instrumental motivation.
