Abstract

Lombok in eastern Indonesia often suffers from erratic rainfall and drought. Therefore, understanding characteristic of rainfall is important for better water resource management on the island. A study focused on spatial and temporal variability of rainfall in Southern Lombok was conducted. Principal component analysis was applied to monthly rainfall data from 1970 to 2003 to determine both spatial and temporal variability. The spatial pattern and variability of rainfall was evaluated from principal component loading, while temporal variability was evaluated from principal component series. Series of principal components were correlated to remote sea surface temperature (SST) in the Pacific and local SST around Lombok. Results showed that the spatial pattern of rainfall in Lombok could be grouped into western, middle, south and southeast regions. It clearly shows that the effect of wind direction during the rainy season and topography were significant on rainfall variability. The rainfall variability in the early rain season was correlated with both remote and local SST. Rainfall variability during the mid rainy season seem to be correlated to local SST in southwest and southeast Lombok rather than with remote SST. Results of this study suggest that there was spatial variability of rainfall in the region in response to global climate driver such as El Niňo Southern Oscillation. Remote SST may be used to predict the onset of the rainy season while local SST may be suitable to predict rainfall during a period of rainy season.
