Abstract

This thesis analysed about “The Use of Sasak-Indonesian Code Switching in Class Interaction at MA Darul Hikmah Darek.” The aims of this research were to describe the types of code switching used by students at MA Darul Hikmah and to examine the factors that influence students of MA Darul Hikmah to codeswitch during the conversation. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The technique of collecting data used by researcher as follows observation, recording, and note-taking. The samples of this research are two classes of 10th grade with six teachers in different subjects. The data are categorized base on Myers Scotton theory as theory of the types of code switching and Holmes’s theory as theory of factors that influence students to codeswitch during the conversation. From the data the researcher took 237 sentences of conversations between students and teachers. the results of this research show: first, there are two types of code switching, they are intra-sentential code switching (80.85%), whereas a speaker that switches from one language to another between different sentences and inter- sentential code switching (19,14%), speaker switches from one language to another within the same sentence. The researcher also finds out that 38 sentences belong to intra-sentential code switching and 9 sentences belong to inter-sentential code switching. Second, the researcher finds out that there are two factors that influence students to code switch during conversation. Those are, first the participant which shows that students switch code depends on whom they speak to. And the second is the function which depends on the content of the conversation that being talked by the speaker. This research, the researcher hope that it can be references for the next future research.
