Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges in teaching English in the Philippines specifically on those occuring in three phases of teaching: planning, implementation, and assessment. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. This study used narrative inquiry as the research design. The data were collected through interview which was conducted to six Indonesian student teachers of SEA-Teacher batch 6. The objectives of the study are finding out kinds of challenges in teaching English in the Philippines as well as identifying factors causing the challenges and ways to deal with them. Findings of the study reveal that there are twenty one challenges in teaching English in the Philippines which are classified into three groups: planning, implementation, and assessment. The factor causing the challenges were curriculum, students, learning environment, and school facilities that are followed by further description for each factor. To cope the problems the student teachers took some efforts: a) consulting with cooperating teacher or mentor and students buddy; b) making interesting activities; c) using body language in teaching for better understanding; d) using assissting media for teaching; e) minimizing the number of learning activities in one meeting; f) continuing learning activities and delivering learning material; g) improving personal skill in teaching; h) adopting references and rubric from books and internet; i) conducting personal approach with students; j) giving appreciation to students; k) conducting self-reflection and self-refreshment of their teaching.
