Abstract

Motivation is one of the important factors that affect the students’ achievement in learning language. This research attempted to examine the correlation between students’ motivation and their achievement in learning English language. It also tried to look for which motivation, intrinsic or extrinsic, that has stronger correlation with students’ achievement. The sample of this research was 29 eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Lingsar. This research was a correlation research with descriptive statistical method. The data were collected through questionnaire and document. The findings indicate that there is no significant correlation between students’ motivation and their learning achievement in learning English (r = 0.421, N = 29). However, it showed that the students’ intrinsic motivation (r = 0.370, N = 29) has stronger correlation with their learning achievement than their extrinsic motivation (r = 0.369, N = 29).
