Abstract

This study is entitled “AN INVESTIGATION OF THE HOTEL RECEPTIONISTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THEIR SPEAKING DIFFICULTIES: A Study in Hotels around Senggigi Lombok”. The purpose of this study is to discover the difficulties faced by the hotel receptionist on English speaking skills at several hotels in Sengiggi Lombok and to describe the factors that caused the emergence of the difficulty of the hotel receptionist in speaking English skills at several hotels in Sengiggi Lombok. The subject in this study is the receptionists that worked in several hotels around Senggigi area, while the total number of subject is 25 receptionists. Based on collected data, the receptionists claimed that they tend to speak Bahasa Indonesia rather than speak Englishas the thing that made them difficult in speaking with almost half of the respondents has less fluency and create misunderstanding between them and customers. The respondents admitted that the internal factor from themselves as the most affecting problems in their speaking difficulties. There are another several reasons found that the cause the difficulties for the receptionist in speaking, such as they have less confidence in speaking, and feel stressful when speaking. This due to lack of confidence, lack of vocabulary, lack of pronunciation,grammar rules and lack of knowledge of accent variety.
