Abstract

This study entitled “THE USE OF CODESWITCHING BY THE HOSTS OF BREAKOUT PROGRAM ON NET TV”. The program was aired by NET TV and was hosted by two presenters namely Boy William and Sheryl Shenafia. In BreakOut program, the researcher analyzes the type of code switching, the function of code switching, and the factors that motivate them to code switch. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, in which the sample involving the two hosts of BreakOut program. Data were collected using video that have been downloaded from BreakOut Youtube channel. Having been transcribed and translated, the data were identified based on codeswitching in order to analyze the types, the functions, and the factors that motivate them for codeswitching. The researcher found out three types of codeswitching by the hosts of BreakOut NET TV, namely intra-sentential codeswitching 65,57%, inter-sentential codeswitching 39%, and tag switching 4%. There are ten functions of codeswitching by the hosts of BreakOut NET TV such as (a) personalization, (b) emphasis, (c) reiteration, (d) substitution, (e) mitigating message, (f) interjection, (g) aggravating message, (h) quotation, (i) designation, (j) topic shift. There are three factors that motivate them to code switch, those are (a) social factors, (b) social dimension, and (c) individual factors.
